Friday recap: Czech-USA advance to women’s final, Slovakia-Canada to men’s final

The championship’s penultimate day saw 12 games, highlighted by the four semi-finals in the men’s and women’s tournaments. On the women’s side, the USA beat Canada and the Czech Republic beat Slovakia. However, the Slovak men avenged their women´s loss against the Czechs, and Canada shut out Greece. As well, Hong Kong won the men´s B pool title.

Men

5-8: Portugal – India 4:3 (3:2, 0:1, 1:0)

This early morning game wasn’t so active from either side. Even so, five goals were scored in the first period, three by Portugal and two by India. The second period was also sluggish, but not as much as the first. India scored to make it 3-3 heading to the third period. Early in the final period, Jeff Gallant scored his second of the game, which stood up as the winner.

17-18: Lebanon – Bermuda 6:1 (3:2, 0:1, 3:1)

Goals and assists: 34. Fadl (Abdulahad), 35. Fadl (Abdulahad, Skaff), 36. Haddad (B. Boulous, J. Boulos) – 13. Estey (Merritt), 40. Dzurus (Cundliffe, Bilodeau).

In a rematch of yesterday’s game, which Lebanon won 6-1, stayed scoreless until Bermuda opened the scoring late in the first period. However, they still had a four-goal deficit to overcome. When Lebanon scored three goals in a row in the third period, they essentially put it away. They won the game 3-2, and 9-3 on aggregate, to claim 17th place.

5-8: USA – Switzerland 6:3 (2:1, 3:1, 1:1)

Goals and assists:7. Wilson (Caron), 7. Defazio (Caron), 20. Black (Wilson, Gregory), 22. Hickey (Ruiz), 24. Carter, 44. Senecal (Black) – 13. Y. Müller (Faina), 19. Mellinger (Stucki), 41. Mermoud.

The Americans recovered from yesterday’s defeat against Greece in the quarter-finals to beat Switzerland. They blew a two-goal lead, but eventually earned their second win against the Swiss in this tournament. Three goals in the second period helped them win 6-3 and earn the right to play for 5th place against Portugal. Switzerland will fight for 7th place against India.

15-16: Cayman Islands – Armenia 3:6 (0:1, 2:3, 1:2)

Armenia makes history in by winning the B pool bronze medal! After a defeat to Great Britain in the B semi-finals, they turned in a great performance against the Cayman Islands and won the bronze medal for first time in Armenian history with a 6-3 win. The stars of the match were brothers Hovig and Garo Jerivan, who scored all of the Armenian goals

SF: Canada – Greece 5:0 (3:0, 1:0, 1:0)

Goals and assists: 3. Laurencelle (N. Yetman, Martel), 4. Dy. Kelly (Du. Kelly), 14. Martel (Laurencelle), 25. O‘Keefe (Azevedo, Dy. Kelly), 37. Reid (Gingera).

If the Greeks wanted to keep the game tied at zero for some time, they didn’t do very well. They missed on their first chance and then Canada went into a two-goal lead just three minutes into the game. Danick Martel made it 3-0 before the first intermission and Patrick O’Keefe added another one in the second period. Canada easily sailed past the Greeks to take a spot in the final game. Greece has to regroup for a bronze-medal game on Saturday afternoon.

13-14: Hong Kong – United Kingdom 3:0 (0:0, 2:0, 1:0)

Goals and assists: 18. S. Pham (T. Pham, Nguyen), 23. C. Wong (D. Wong, Reid), 35. Graham (Sullivan).

Hong Kong built up a two-goal lead in the second period with one shorthanded goal and one on the power play. Then Andrew Graham scored a third one with 10 minutes to go and the Brits just couldn‘t get back into it. Matthew Lui managed to pull off some great saves and shut the door until the end to win first gold medal for Team Hong Kong in their fifth appearance.

11-12: France – Haiti 4:1 (2:0, 1:0, 1:1)

Goals and assists: 3. Tanguy (Dissenga), 12. Tanguy (Domain), 30. Domian (Tanguy, Martel), 42. Tanguy (Domain, Favarin) – 42. Aimé (Cherubin).

France started the game as the more active team. For most of the first period they were in Haiti’s zone and they converted their chances into two goals in the second half of the the period. Haiti had some chances too, but they weren’t as dangerous. The second period had two different parts. In the first part, Haiti controlled the game, and in the second, France. In the third period, the game was interrupted by a lot of stoppages in play. Only the end was more active, when both teams scored once.

SF: Slovakia – Czech Republic (0:0, 0:0, 0:0 – 0:0 – 1:0)

Goals and assists: shootout winner: Svitana.

A ball hockey record crowd of 7,592 saw Slovakia defeat the Czech Republic in a shootout following 55 minutes of scoreless hockey. Neither Slovak Stanislav Petrik and Czech Lukas Heczko allowed a goal during regulation time or overtime, but both were beaten in the seven-round shootout - Petrik twice and Heczko three times. As a result, the Czechs will face Greece for the bronze medal and the Slovaks will play Canada for gold.

Women

SF: Canada – USA 2:3 (1:0, 0:0, 1:3)

Goals and assists: 6. Desmer (Cooze), 38. Kean (Johnston) – 31. Foley (Stewart, Bronson), 41. Steadman (Foley), 45. Dobson (Wilde, Pfundt).

Rebecca Dobson’s blast from the top of the faceoff circle with 34 seconds left in regulation time broke a 2-2 tie to give the USA the win against their arch-rivals from Canada, earning them a spot in the women’s final for the first time ever. Prior to the goal, the Americans had never led in the game, scoring two game-tying goals in the third period.

5-6: Great Britain – Italy 0:3 (0:0, 0:1, 0:2)

Goals and assists: 17. Corriero (Mazzarello, P. D‘ambrogio), 38. Mormile (Mirarchi), 38. Delenardo (A. Furletti Blomberg).

In the round robin of the women‘s tournament, Great Britain defeated Italy thanks one lone goal. Now the teams met each other again in the fifth-place series and Italy got revenge, as they started the series with a 3-0 victory. Nicole Corrier scored the first and most important goal after 16 minutes of play, and two more goals in just 14 seconds in the third period decided it all. GB will have the chance to turn the series around on Saturday morning.

SF: Czech Republic – Slovakia 2:0 (1:0, 1:0, 0:0)

Goals and assists: 8. Nìmcová (Manhartová, Pøibylová), 30. Lédlová (Pøibylová, Køížová).

With Slovakia’s strength in goal, the Czech women knew they’d have to outplay their semi-final opponents by a wide margin to ensure victory, and they did just that by scoring a goal in each of the first two periods. Katerina Nemcova and Aneta Ledlova got the goals and Katerina Zechovska stopped every shot she faced in front of 3,217 enthusiastic fans. The Czechs will play the USA for the gold, while Slovakia will face Canada for bronze.
