Canadian women take North American derby in tight contest

5. 6. 2017 | Derek OBrien
The women’s tournament is getting more interesting after Canada’s 2-1 win over the USA. After a scoreless first period, Rebecca Dobson opened the scoring for the USA in the first minute of the second period. However, the Canadian power play struck twice, with Kristen Cooze, Amanda Kean and tournament scoring leader Jamie Lee Rattray combining on both goals to give them the win. The Americans pressed hard for the equalizer and had a late power play, but were unable to beat Nathalie Girouard again. With the win, Canada moves into a first-place tie with the host Czechs, who have a game in hand.

Reactions

Tyler Spitzer (head coach, Team Canada): I think that special teams played a big role today. We scored twice on the power play and then we also had some good penalty killing. I think we defended well against Team USA, we were successful in our defensive zone, and using our speed was really important, in my opinion.

Paige Harrington (forward, Team USA): It was a battle. We worked hard the whole game but just didn’t get the finish we wanted. We had chances, but sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce your way. They’re a good team, and there are a lot of good teams here, so every game’s a battle and you just have to find a way to outwork them. We just need to move our feet a bit more, keep the passing going and keep getting shots on net.
