One goal enough for Czech win vs Portugal

5. 6. 2017 | Derek OBrien
Just like their female compatriots earlier in the day, the Czech men dominated their opponents over 45 minutes but ran into a hot goalie – this time Daniel Medeiros of Portugal. They only beat him once – Radim Stepanik near the game’s midpoint on a nice feed from Tomas Wrobel – but that was enough for the regulation victory. Jan Simara recorded the shutout, as the Czechs widened their lead on top of Group A2 and leave the Portuguese still searching for their first points.

Reactions

Jaroslav Pavlík (assistant coach, Team Czech Republic): It was a very difficult game for us. They are obviously aware of their abilities and that they beat us in the last two championships. We didn’t start well, we got a penalty right away. Thank the Lord for that one goal, because we had a lot of trouble. We had a large number of shots that were blocked, and we just could not find a way to score another goal. But a win’s a win.

Alex Bovoletis (head coach, Team Portugal): It was fantastic playing in front of the home crowd in the Czech Republic - a wonderful crowd and a wonderful team. I thought we played a fantastic game. There were a lot of penalties, but at the end of the day we didn’t score when we had the chances on the power play. It was pretty much an even game - they got one and we didn’t get any.
