Slovaks win in shootout following double shutout with Italy, finish 3rd

7. 6. 2017 | Derek OBrien

Following a double shutout by Daniela Zuziakova and Nicole Paniccia over 45 minutes of hockey, followed by four scoreless shootout rounds, Barbara Kezmarska scored the shootout winner in the last group-stage game of the women’s tournament. As a result, Slovakia finishes third and faces the Czech Republic in Friday’s semi-finals. Italy will face Great Britain in a two-game series for fifth place.

Reactions

Nicole Paniccia (goaltender, Team Italy): As a goalie, you just have to focus on your game and forget about everything else. As selfish as that sounds, sometimes you’ve just gotta keep making saves in order to get the team motivated. Hopefully that creates offence and today it unfortunately didn’t, but I’m really proud of this team in this tournament. I think we’ve impressed a lot of people. Nobody expected us to go into overtime with the USA or Slovakia, or do as well as we did against Canada.

Daniela Zuziakova (goaltender, Team Slovakia): I haven’t played in a game like this for a very long time. It was a very tough game, but we were ready for it. We needed to win and we did. Tomorrow it is a day off for us, so we have to prepare for the semi-final.
