Americans finish 1st place with 2-1 win over Swiss

6. 6. 2017 | Derek OBrien
Jim Daugherty’s goal with 6:18 remaining in regulation time gave Team USA a 2-1 victory over Switzerland. Johnny Ruiz opened the scoring for the Americans in the first period and Marc Muller tied it in the second with a slapper from the point on the power play. Otherwise, US goalie Jonathan Rethage was perfect, especially in the late going as the Swiss pushed for the equalizer. Two wins in a 13-hour span lift the Americans into top spot in Group A2 with 11 points, while the Swiss remain third with six.

Reactions

Marc Müller (best player, Team Switzerland): I think we played a good game. We had enough chances to score goals and win, so it‘s hard to lose. It was an important game for us, we needed these points, but now we have to take what comes in the quarterfinal. I think if we go up every game, it‘s gonna be one of our best games. When you lose 2-1 to U.S., you have a chance to play against every team at this tournament. We saw all the teams that we have the chance to play against. Now we have to wait which team comes and then preparate for this game.

Jonathan Rethage (goaltender, Team USA): Two teams playing neck and neck the whole game. The Swiss came out running, like we knew they would, and we knew it was going to be a battle. That’s what it was and we came out with the W. The toughest part for me was staying focused because there were stretches of a few minutes where I wouldn’t see a shot, then a flurry of five or six at a time. As long as I stay focused and mentally prepared, I think that good things will happen. It was kinda tough waking up early after playing so late last night, but we do that in tournaments back home, so it’s nothing we’re not used to.
