Czech women back on top after shootout win over Slovakia

5. 6. 2017 | Derek OBrien
The women’s tournament in Pardubice is showing itself to be a very close one, with almost nothing to choose between the top four teams. That was reinforced with the Czech Republic’s 2-1 shootout victory over Slovakia. The Czechs held a wide edge in play through 45 minutes, outshooting the Slovaks 31-8. But thanks to the netminding of Zuzana Tomcikova, the score was 1-1, with Czech Denisa Krizova scoring on a brilliant individual effort in the first period and Slovak Barbara Kezmarska on a power play in the second. However, Tomcikova could not stop the last shooter she faced – Lucie Manhartova in the shootout.

Reactions

Karel Manhart (head coach, Team Czech Republic): It was a tough game, as usual between these competitors. I am disappointed with our power play today, which was better against weaker opponents. We are happy with the two points.

Maros Hric (assistant coach, Team Slovakia): We had a meeting after the game against USA. We talked about our performance and played better today. We have one point; the shootout is a coin toss. The luckier team won today, although they had more shots in the game. I have to encourage my players to shoot more too.
