Haiti comes from behind to sink the Cayman Islands

1. 6. 2017 | Derek OBrien
In a back-and-forth game that was full of emotion, physical play and goals, Haiti came from behind to edge their Caribbean rivals from the Cayman Islands 7-5 to open Group B2. The Caymanians led 5-4 after two periods, but cheered on by a legion of local fans, Haiti scored twice in the first two minutes of the third period, then held on the rest of the way. Patrick Chery assisted on the tying goal and scored the game-winner and Mike Fils-Aime added a late power-play goal to go along with an earlier assist. Fabrice Decosted also had a goal and an assist for the victors, while Chris Yeramian had three points and Scott Elliot and Eric Armstrong each had two-point games in a losing cause.

Reactions

Head coach of Team Haiti: We started off really well, but in the second period we got away from our game. We have some new players and they were nervous, and we started parading to the penalty box. What people saw in the second period was not Team Haiti, but in the third period we calmed down, we played our game, and we’re fortunate to come out with a win. (The support from the fans) means a lot to us. We came by ourselves, we’re far from home, but the people have adopted us in a warm manner and we’d like to say “thank you” to the people of Pardubice and we look forward to having a good tournament.

Head coach of team Cayman Islands: It was the first game of the tournament for us. It was the rematch of gold medal match in 2015 in Zug. It was really hard game for both sides. Unfortunately, we weren’t better in scoring goals. When it was 5-on-5 we played very well. We just have to work on staying out of the penalty box.
