3. 6. 2017 | Marek Kratochvíl
The opening game of the Women´s World Championship brought together the teams from the USA and Italy. The Italians had a long 5-on-3 power play in first 15 minutes, but couldn´t score until the start of final period thanks to Luisa Mormile. The Americans equalized with less than two minutes to go and an extra attacker in. Cherie Stewart sent the game into a shootout and Rita Simpson got the winner with her game-winning shot.

Reactions

Cherie Stewart, forward of team USA: We were so excited. Obviously, there is jitters I think for both teams, but after the second period we felt pretty confident. We wanted to play our game and tie-it up. It just took us a long time to get that goal. We talked on the face-off, usually I shoot from the left side so we just wanted to get a shot on goal. Nothing fancy.

Rick DiBiase, head coach of team Italy: My girls played majority of the game great, we only faulted a minute before the end of the third period. But I´m happy with one point and performance of our goalkeeper. We need her excellent saves. I´m proud of her, she played really well.
